“My Objective is to touch the lives and empower as many children as possible, so that less children become victims and more of them can gain the knowledge and training to help them succeed in life. To help create positive life experiences for the children in my community.”
~Sensei Sarah
Sensei Sarah Corey has been training in the martial arts since 1993.She began her training in the heart of the city of Boston at One Step Beyond Martial Arts Training Center. This dojo (training center) is still in operation and is the 2nd oldest martial arts training center in Boston. Sensei Sarah and her father owned this dojo from 2001-2021.
In 1996 after a year of assisting her instructor with the children’s programs she began running her own classes under her instructor’s supervision. In 1999 Sensei Sarah was promoted to the rank of ShoDan (1st degree black belt) in the TAMA system of self defense and Sho Dan (1st degree black belt) in American Combat Karate. In 2002 after becoming the mother of a little girl named Dakota, she decided that children’s self defense would be important to add to her repertoire, so she became an internationally certified RADKids instructor. During the certification course she learned of another equally important program known as RAD. This is an internationally certified self defense program for women and teen girls. In 2003 Sensei Sarah completed this certification and has since also become a RAD for ladies basic, advanced, keychain and seniors instructor. Currently Sensei Sarah holds the rank of Roku Dan (sixth degree) black belt in the TAMA and YoDan (4th degree) in American Combat Karate.
Sensei Sarah noticed that Dakota loved to watch her teach class and how she would mimic the student’s moves even though she was just 2 years old, so it was at this time that she adapted the curriculum to fit the age appropriate needs of the 3-5 year old market and began teach her little dragons program. Now Dakota is 8 years old and has her purple belt, but her little sister, Kacey was born in 2008 and so Sensei Sarah decided that even younger children should do karate too! Armed with a bachelors degree in business and her CDA (child development associate) in preschool teaching she used her knowledge of child development to develop her own curriculum for infant/toddlers from age 14 months – 3 that she is patenting and is trademarking as “Sensei Sarah’s Peewee Pandas” where children from 2 months after they begin walking can begin their journey in the martial arts or just learn some great balance and coordination skills.
In 2006 Sensei Sarah got a request from a parent to work with her son who is autistic and so she created a special needs class that she calls A+ Karate (Atypical + Neurodivergent martial arts) that is a wonderful and energetic class. These classes are for children with level 1 autism spectrum disorder, with Down Syndrome and/or who have other developmental delays or who have been diagnosed as neurodivergent.
Sensei Sarah competed for the Boston Police Athletic league’s competition Team as well as on her own for many years earning multiple national and international awards.
Sensei Sarah Currently is known as the “traveling martial arts instructor” because she teaches all over the state of Massachusetts from Boston to Sutton and anywhere in between and beyond! Sensei Sarah teaches at facilities, in homes and in dojos.
